10,000 Hours

I read the print version of Maria A. Ressa's speech Draw the Line. I was struck by the idea of Malcolm Gladwell that she referred to. Gladwell wrote that we need to spend ten thousand hours to become an expert of something.

I realized that I have not spent my 10,000 hours to become an expert on anything.

I realized that there are three main areas of law that I would like to be an expert in:

1. Criminal Law
2. Land Transfer and Registration Law including matters in the IPRA, Land Reform Law, Autonomy and Taxation that touches the subject.
and
3. Labor Law

Another aspect of my career that I really want to develop is generating new clients. I will be celebrating my second year anniversary as a lawyer and I have only approximately twenty active cases though I have resolved at least twenty in the past two years too. The figures are quite negligible.

Another thing that  I should also develop is how to bill clients properly. I have a tendency to charge miniscule fees that at first glance seems helpful to the client but when it goes down to the wire, I usually realize that it would be bad for the case and the office. Litigation in our country unfortunately is expensive and the fees would only be enough to fund the initial phase of the trial. The rest becomes my problem which is bad for the case and the office.

So I have decided to accumulate my 150,000 hours focused on these matters and hopefully I will become the lawyer that I want to become.
